This year, Richard Miller and Nadal joined hands again to design the RM 27-01 tourbillon watch. This watch set a new record in lightness and durability, and was hailed as the ‘lightest’ model at the 2013 SIHH.
The movement of RM27-01 is an astonishing masterpiece of engineering and technology. The first architectural structure was extremely complex, born of Richard Mille’s determination to develop a watch with the movement placed in the center of the case by hanging. Richard Mille took inspiration from the suspension bridge structure of structural engineering, and expressed his willingness to apply such a structural design to the world of watches only a few tens of millimeters wide. After several months of meticulous research and development, RichardMille’s engineers finally embody this avant-garde design concept and have achieved what is called the most innovative building structure in recent years.
The plate of the RM 27-01 Rafael Nadal Tourbillon watch is connected to the case by four steel cables. The braided steel cable is only 0.35 mm thick. Combining rigidity and toughness, this structure protects a movement with a total weight of only 3.5 grams. The reason why the weight of the movement can be greatly reduced is mainly based on the application of high-end materials: the bridge plate and the tourbillon frame are made of five-level titanium alloy, and the barrel and bridge mechanism of the barrel are made of aluminum lithium alloy.
These cables are tightened by means of tensioners at 3 and 9 o’clock, and pulleys that act as tower bridges at the 4 ends of the movement. Each steel cable is fixed on the tensioning device, passes through the upper pulley and the movement, returns to the lower pulley, and then enters the inner ring located on the lower layer of the watch. After the rope is wound, the watchmaker turns the center ring of the tensioning device with a special tool to tighten the rope. The tensioning of the steel cable and the control of the tensioning force are very difficult operations. When the tension is too tight, the wire rope or the fixing device may be broken at any time and damage the movement; on the contrary, if the wire rope is too loose, it may cause the movement to resonate and affect the timing performance.
This remarkable movement, thanks to the movement structure suspended in the center of the case, can withstand accelerations exceeding 5000 G. The weight of the RM 27-01 is only 19 grams, and it includes a Velcro® strap! This lightweight body also comes from the application of the case material. The RM 27-01 case with a one-piece case structure is made of carbon material. Limited edition of 50 pieces of carbon nanotube material with Velcro® strap RM 27-01.
The dark gray color comes from the high-concentration carbon nanotubes in the structure, which brings perfect impact resistance and scratch resistance, and provides Rafael Nadal’s indispensable wearing comfort in tennis matches. He will all be wearing the RM 27-01 debut game.
Rafael Nadal’s collaboration with Richard Mille opens a successful title page: On the tennis court, Nadal from Mallorca won the French Open Championship for the seventh time in 2012; in terms of watches, in addition to launching Richard Mille to shake with ultra-light weight In addition to the RM 027 Rafael Nadal tourbillon watch in the horological world, the RM 035 Rafael Nadal watch, which is able to withstand an acceleration of 5000 G without affecting its performance, has been awarded Chronofiable® certification for its excellent performance.
